After hearing about the distribution company Neuton going bankrupt earlier this week, today has seen Pinnacle, another major distributor going under. The knock-on effect of this will be massive for the hundreds of labels working with these distributors whose stock and revenue will be lost. This in turn will affect all the artists on those labels. Labels on Pinnacle include Bedrock, Audio Therapy, Hope Recordings, Marine Parade, Distinctive Records... full list here
http://www.pinnacle-entertainment.co.uk/labels_list.php
One of the main reasons for this downfall is the illegal files haring and downloading of music. It would be a much needed boost to the whole music industry if people stopped file sharing and illegal downloads. It will be a sorry day when all your favorite artists can't afford to make music and all your favorite labels are gone.
Enjoy the music, support your artists.

RIAA shuts down its lawsuit machine
Most talked-about tech story today has to be the RIAA's surprise announcement that it is halting its long-running campaign of suing people for sharing music files online ... after already suing 35,000 of them since 2003.
I think Dwight Silverman sums up the conventional wisdom quite succinctly:
It took the recording industry more than five years to figure out what the rest of us knew before they even started doing it: Suing its customers for sharing music is not a good idea.
Whether its new solution is a better idea is becoming a matter of much debate. Instead of lawsuits, the RIAA has signed agreements with major -- but undisclosed -- ISPs that effectively turn them into copyright police. I'll quote Eliot Van Buskirk's straightforward explanation:
If RIAA agents notice that you're sharing music without permission (usually by conducting its own P2P searches), it will e-mail your ISP alerting them to that activity. Depending on the nature of the agreement, the ISP will either forward the e-mail to you or send you another communication to the effect that your music sharing is not permitted. If you continue to share, you'll receive one or two additional warnings, after which the ISP will slow your connection. If the allegedly infringing activity persists thereafter, you may find your internet connection stops working altogether.
News.com's Greg Sandoval highlights how this new strategy effectively does an end run around due process:
What this means is that ISPs have now gone into the enforcement business, and this has always been one of the greatest fears of those who have wanted ISPs to remain neutral.
"This is very troubling," said Cindy Cohn, legal director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group that advocates for Internet rights. "Creating lists of people who can't get Internet access based on allegations of breaking a law that hasn't been evaluated in a court of law. It's good that that the (RIAA) wants to stop suing individuals but they should haven't done it in the first place. I'd be especially concerned if the music labels can get you kicked off one ISP and then arrange to get you kicked off others, or the creation of blacklists. That's certainly what our fears have been about private legal enforcement regimen."
The Wall Street Journal notes that the RIAA still reserves the right to sue "particularly heavy file sharers" or users who ignore repeated warnings.
Exactly why the unidentified ISPs have agreed to be copyright cops isn't clear. Various guesses include concerns about how much bandwidth is eaten up by file sharing, ISPs' wanting to cut deals with entertainment companies to use their content, and
Sandoval adds that the new strategy probably means budget cuts for RIAA, with his sources predicting that the organization "will soon shrink as the major labels reduce costs and their dependence on file-sharing lawsuits."
Incidentally, the Journal includes some numbers about the imminent death of the album. In 2003, 656 million albums were sold. In 2007, that had fallen to 500 million CDs and digital albums combined -- with 844 million individual song downloads sold.
